Postgres database: persistent store for urls. The load balancer dispatches the incoming requests between a multiplicity of frontend instances in a cloud environment. The simplicity of the architecture, illustrated in the picture above, should help us easily locate bottlenecks as they occur going forward. Therefore we add a Redis cache to protect Postgres. In contrast, the Postgres database we chose is stateful by default and can soon become a bottleneck. The frontend server is stateless and started up in multiple machines to handle increased load. We have a frontend server implementing REST APIs, which needs a database for storing and fetching urls. Now, let’s start with a high level design where we break the application into independent services and choose suitable software stack for them. We shall iteratively locate and eliminate such bottlenecks going forward. In reality however, a sub-system in the application can become a bottleneck as an attempt is made to scale the system. A fully scalable system can be scaled by throwing more hardware thus making arbitrary throughput numbers such as those listed above possible. The Performance and throughput numbers that we hope to achieve is a function of system design and hardware. Also, services should be “elastic”and scale automatically by bringing more nodes into service as traffic increases. Performance expectations from the API to retrieve the original url is higher because it will be requested frequently and hence it is critical for the end user experience. “Massive” number of urls actively managed.Response time should be less than 1 second.Given a short url, return the original urlīit.ly is a popular online url shortening service, which you may experiment with to get a feel for what we are trying to achieve here.īefore we dwell on individual services let’s list the performance and scalability requirements for our APIs.Meanwhile, Docker Compose makes local development simple and fun. Our core logic is probably around 50 lines of Python! Further, a simple and and easily understood design goes a long way in building software whose scalability can be improved over time. Kubernetes is a great enabler of scalability for such micro-service based applications. We will break the application into multiple autonomous services, which facilitate independent scaling of parts of the application. You’ll be introduced to the Dockers and container management software, specifically Docker Compose and Kubernetes, which constitutes a helpful toolset for building scalable/distributed apps. We will start with the high level architecture as well as the software stack and planned deployment options. Specifically, we will create a REST service that will provide APIs to create a tiny url and retrieve the original url. We will deploy the app in Docker Compose for local testing and later in Kubernetes for scalable deployment in a public cloud. This gives us the opportunity to work on design topics without being bogged down with functionality details. Although this application appears simple from the functionality side of things, we still may run into all the scalability pitfalls that could be found in more complex applications. Tinyurl application is a popular system design topic too, whose function is converting a long url into a shorter version. We’ll discuss design of the well-known Tinyurl application, which we’ll build from scratch. Take that application and deploy in-cloud in a few minutes via Kubernetes for a larger audience!įurthermore, Python is a great choice for developer productivity.Use Docker Compose to develop and iterate rapidly through a distributed application on your laptop.Organize your application functions for scalability.Scalability is absolutely critical to user experience: how can we sustain reasonable user experience regardless of the number users on the system? These are the questions we will address in this blog step by step, with a concrete example.Īfter reading this blog, you should be able to: How would you scale it to millions of users? When I started editing video, I bought a Canon HV40 and a $80 Graphics card (make sure your computer has an open slot for it.) and installed it myself using Youtube Tutorials. So you will need a new computer or you need to make sure the first computer you buy is upgrade-able. Take into consideration that VIDEO takes WAY more computer power than editing AUDIO. When you are using BASIC software you can use a cheaper computer because the software doesn’t drain the RAM or eat at the processor. You can check Craigslist for computers! I bought a computer, speakers and 20″ flat screen monitor for $50 on craigslist right when I moved to Los Angeles. I still had an external hard drive to be safe back then too. My old computer was like 4 GB of DDR 2 and it ran Windows ME and it worked for me to make my break out mixtape. Just make sure it is a decent computer that has at least 4GB of DDR3 RAM or higher and a 100GB Hard Drive. Point being, if you are using Adobe Audition that I already gave you, it is fine to use a cheaper computer. Then later I got a $300 used computer from someone and that was the computer I used to make ALL my music for Hibernation’s Over 1. lolĪnyways then I lost that computer and got another crappy desktop. Random side note: I used to record and mix everyone’s music in Chicago Heights for them with my $10 Logitech mic and my laptop. We woke up to the Xbox, Game Cube, anything worth money gone. I used to use an E-machines computer, then I had a laptop that got stolen by a police informant/thief/snitch when I was sleeping at a flop house. Roger Miller was the first to record the tune in 1969 and soon followed by Kenny Rogers and Gordon Lightfoot. In fact, 18 people sang this song before Janis Joplin, including Kris Kristofferson’s version in 1970. Me and Bobby McGee was written by actor, singer, Rhodes scholar and songwriter Kris Kristofferson, who tagged along with his freind Bobby Neuwirth to what. Kristofferson wrote the song about a life lived without obligations - “freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose” - with Fred Foster and recorded his own gruff-voiced version in 1970. You may be surprised to learn that over 200 musicians have covered Me and Bobby McGee. Most famously performed and recorded by Janis Joplin in 1970 for her 1971 Pearl album, “Me and Bobby McGee” was first cut by Roger Miller in 1969. (Ironically, while Kristofferson was off on tour, Nelson was making a rare appearance at the CMAs, performing “Rainbow Connection” with Kacey Musgraves.) The performance was the centerpiece of a tribute to the 83-year-old songwriter and Country Music Hall of Fame member, who received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Sheryl Crow and Dierks Bentley teamed up to perform Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee” with an assist from Chris Janson on harmonica and Brothers Osborne’s John Osborne and the Eagles’ Joe Walsh on guitar. Iconic memory is the mind’s ability to retain cognitive material when it is laid out by way of visual cues. Finally, maps also serve retention and processing by way of something called iconic memory enhancement and also, possibly, by dual coding. Concept maps also assist greatly in reducing cognitive load: with all the ideas, relationships, and propositions laid out on one page (instead of being embedded in paragraphs of prose), limited memory resources are freed up for more productive work. In short, this is the kind of thing that promotes deep learning as opposed to surface learning. When students can readily see all the ideas and relationships in a system, they can more easily understand them, relate them to each other, modify or revise them, and also remember them. Ĭoncept maps (and the other mapping tools we shall talk about below) work because they make a set of ideas and relationships visible or explicit. Finally, Ausubel also said that we learn best when we think of ideas embedded in their total context: the general ones on the same page as the specific ones. Learning, Ausubel also said, occurs best when it is tied into what is already known. The process of making these distinctions makes each of the concepts richer, or more integrative, as each concept now becomes more precise. Under this theory, learning is defined as the attaching of concepts we currently grasp to new concepts in a process of differentiation and reconciliation: in the process, people see how the new concepts are both different from and at the same time related to other concepts. In developing CmapTools, Novak and Cañas drew upon psychologist David Ausubel and his assimilation theory of learning. There is also a learning curve for understanding the concept map theory more on that below. The software itself, thus, possesses a narrow learning curve. Any Cmap can also instantly be converted to a web page, for viewing by those who do not have CmapTools installed, or for displaying the Cmap on one’s own website. Permissions are granted through a very easy to use parameter screen. Users can save their Cmap’s locally, and also upload them to Cmap servers, where other users throughout the world can see them as well as modify them, if appropriate permissions have been granted. It also is embedded in a rather substantial network infrastructure. Most computers running today would meet its hardware requirements. A concept map then is meant to display in an easy to read format a comprehensive list of the ideas and relations between them that define the content of a certain issue or question.ĬmapTools is open source software that can be freely downloaded and installed for the PC, MAC, Linux, and Solaris. Each node or box can also have a link attached to it that takes one to examples or further detail on that concept (e.g., a website, a video or video, another concept map). The map also is supposed to start with a focus question that can be defined when the map is saved. The map is also arranged hierarchically, with more general concepts at the top and moving downwards to more specific ones. With CmapTools, one draws boxes representing concepts or ideas and lines that connect two or more boxes the lines have a word at their center that explain the relationship between the concepts. They wanted a more precise way to capture how children’s conceptual understanding in the sciences developed.Ī Concept Map on Concept Maps, courtesy of IHMC see live map here The Mars Map, courtesy of NASA The Concept Map called CmapTools ĬmapTools is a concept map developed by researchers Joseph Novak at Cornell and Alberto Cañas at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. The focus in this Wiki will be on the educational use of digital concepts maps. Today, digital concept mapping has found a significant home in K-12 education as well as in higher education. One such concept map was the extensive Mars mission map, created by NASA as an educational and PR tool. Concept maps date as far back as the 1950’s when businesses and government would draw them on large sheets of paper as a way of isolating all the individual components of a system or project. Concept maps have been used both in business and education to focus on the discrete elements of a project or workflow, to demonstrate the interconnections of complex arguments, and to assist in the teaching of virtually any subject matter. Introduction and History Ī concept map is a drawing or diagram that employs boxes to represent concepts and lines to show links between the concepts.
Nature of Silica Sand for Water Filtration You will find various products which suit you on our website. Subsequently, water treatment practice became mainstream after physician John Snow made the connection between the quality of the water and incidences of Cholera in the year 1845/1855. However, this unique way of Filtration got to be refined during the years that followed, culminating with the first global public water supply installation by James Simpson for Chelsea Waterworks company in 1829. The earliest recorded silica sand has been traced back to 1804 when a man by the name John Gibb was able to design and install experimental filters. Silica sand has for a long time been used to purify the water and four grades of silica sand are majorly used for water filtration worldwide. We will address this topic in detail in the following article. This process is known as (testing sand grains by sieves). We use this to pass a specific weight of sand and know the weights of sand with different diameters in each sieve to indicate the percentage of weights of sand grains with different diameters. Meanwhile, to determine the percentage of sand samples’ components based on diameters, we use a set of sieves placed over each other. ☻However, it was soon noticed that samples of sand or gravel taken from any area in the quarry contains grains of different diameters. It was brought from sand quarries and was also discovered to be cheap and available in large quantities compared to other types. ☻After several experiments, silica sand for water filtration was discovered to be the most commonly used in Egypt. Why silica sand is used as filter media for water filtration, and how it works? Thus, many kinds of natural materials were used as a filtering medium, including: ☻The research to determine how to choose a filtering medium for filters, hence, began. ☻Subsequently, several filters were invented, and they were classified according to filtering rates, operating methods, the direction of water flow, and their method of control of the sedimentation process. The use of such filters together with sedimentation process were incredibly beneficial when treatment by chemical clarification is not being used. However, sand filters with high rates were called “Rapid Sand Filters”. ☻In 1880, Patrick Clark developed the slow sand filter, thereby increasing the filtering rate, and reducing the area of land used to construct filters in the United States of America, particularly in New Jersey. This was followed by its extensive use in the United States of America, about 50 years later. ☻ When sand and gravel started to be used for filtration, slow sand filters were used extensively in England and Scotland. Since then, the use of sand filters to treat surface water came to light. Therefore, this silica sand for water filtration was used as filter to obtain safe drinking water. The idea of filtering water to obtain clean drinking water dates back to the Pharaonic Era, i.e., 4000 BC when researchers found traces of a sand filter in Alexandria dating back to 50AD. And in this regard, it’s pretty successful. Ultimately, it seems that IE for Xbox is really designed to expand the available entertainment services you can consume on Microsoft’s console. You’ll want a real keyboard-or another device, ideally-instead. And while the onscreen keyboard is fine for quick navigation, it’s maddening for even the shortest emails. This is a problem Windows RT users are going to face soon, but of course Xbox users can (pardon themselves) console themselves with apps such as YouTube or ESPN instead of using the web versions. Flash doesn’t work, and can’t, since you cannot install add-ons. And while you can enable a mobile web mode if you want, I see no reason for that: My own site, and sites like Facebook and Twitter look just great on this browser. Thanks to its IE rendering core, sites render as expected, which is to say properly. Moving the teardrop cursor around the keyboard isn’t ideal, but it works. And while the onscreen keyboard looks a lot like the one in Windows 8, an examination of the two side-by-side reveals many differences, which I chalk up to the differences in the form factors. The typing experience isn’t quite up to Windows 8 standards, again because of the lack of touch controls. Pressing Y brings up the address bar and a nice Web Hub interface that provides visual thumbnails for your Favorites, and recent and featured web sites. You move a large teardrop cursor around with the left stick and select items with the A button as expected. Navigation is surprisingly decent, even with a balky Xbox controller. And because it’s not possible to touch the Xbox screen, there’s a Forward button in addition to Back. IE for Xbox also prominently features Favorites (as well as recent and featured sites), a beloved browser element that is curiously quite hidden in Windows 8. There are some layout differences-the Xbox version sits at the top of the screen, not the touch-friendly bottom as in Windows 8, for example-but the familial resemblance is there. It closely resembles the Windows 8 Metro-style IE version most of all, with a large address bar area that is visually very similar to its Windows 8 cousin. If there’s anything surprising about Internet Explorer for Xbox, it’s that it so faithfully reproduces the Internet Explorer experience on your HDTV. And in an intriguing move aimed at driving usage, Microsoft has elected to discontinue the Facebook and Twitter apps and Xbox and direct users to the service’s web sites in IE instead. Not only does it bring much of the power of desktop and mobile IE versions to the living room, it does so in ways that take advantage of key Xbox technologies, including Xbox 360 controller (and remote) based navigation, Kinect voice, and Xbox SmartGlass. Internet Explorer for Xbox is arguably the update’s one major new feature. SuperSite for Windows rendered in IE for Xbox Overall, it’s an evolutionary update to the existing Dashboard, and Microsoft says that it will rollout automatically to all Xbox 360 consoles in the coming weeks. I wrote about this update recently in Microsoft Begins Delivering Dashboard Update for Xbox 360. First up is Internet Explorer, a port of Microsoft’s web browser to its best-selling entertainment console. Rather than a write a review of the new Fall 2012 Dashboard Update for the Xbox 360, I thought it would make more sense to discuss each of the new features in this release individually. |
